We all love comic books, and we all love video games, (And if you don’t why the hell are you here), and many brilliant minds have put these two together in a glorious mix like ice cream and cake. Most of the time they are good games, but other times they can be god awful, (I’m looking at you Superman 64), but on rare occasions they can be amazing, so here are our top 5 comic book games.

#5 Scribblenauts unmasked What if you had the power to summon almost any character or object in the D.C universe to solve puzzles and save the world? Well that’s the objective of Scribblenauts unmasked. This game throws series protagonist Maxwell and his

magic notepad that can summon anything into the D.C world teaming up with Justice League to take back the starites from Joker and the gang.

This game will have you engrossed for hours trying to catch the game out by trying every D.C character you can think of, ( and trust me this is no easy feat, even a fanboy like me got bested by this game on comic knowledge). It might seem like a kids game due to the art style, but this is a must play for fans who wish to test their knowledge.

#4 Lego Marvel superheroes As if the combination of video games and comics wasn’t enough of a sum up of

my childhood, some mastermind decided to throw Lego into the mix in a concoction so naturally fitting I’m surprised someone didn’t already do this on Atari , (instead we got an awful Spiderman game that makes the amazing Spiderman games look good).

Anyway back to the topic at hand, Lego Marvel superhero feels like the natural progression of the Lego game series, as with Lego Batman 2 as a test to see if an open hub world would work in a Lego game, and it did so they went all out and made New York City in all its glory, even including Marvel universe landmarks such as Stark tower, X mansion and even getting 4th wall breaking with Marvel headquarters. This game has a hilarious story surrounding the classic bad guys steal cosmic cube and heroes try to get it back. And with over 150 characters to collect and side missions all throughout New York, this game will have you hooked long after you finish the main campaign.

#3 Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 Although this isn’t exclusively a comic book game it is a damn good one,

Capcom is known for its top notch crossover games and this is no exception. Putting a

classic roaster of Marvel characters and pitting them against Capcom’s own made for one of the best fighting game experiences on the SNES, so good that it warranted 2 sequels and a further remix of the 3rd game. Now what did Ultimate do to improve upon 3? Well firstly it balanced the characters attacks out more as some characters had exploits that if done correctly couldn’t be stopped, such as the sentinel kick or Dormammu’s fire attack that could be used to juggle an opponent.

This edition also added a button mashing feature that increases it’s power as well as balancing out the X-factor mode. It also added 12 more characters, (6 from each side), that added classics like Hawkeye for Marvel and Phoenix Wright for Capcom. All in all this has to be in my personal favourite fighter games and defiantly one of the best comic based games out their today.

#2 Spiderman 2 What kid hasn’t imagined what it would be like to be the webbed wonder that is

Spiderman? Being one of Marvels and possibly all of comic’s most recognisable characters, it wasn’t long after the birth of home game consoles that Spiderman got his video game debut in the before mentioned Spiderman game for the Atari 2600, and they have been pumping them out since, And with the launch of the first Spiderman movie in the early 2000’s that brought a great tie in game with it and many thought that because the second movie

wasn’t as good as the first that the game would follow suit, but boy were they wrong. Following the movie’s basic plot, and with a revised map and web swinging, this game just built on the fun of the first, with hub world time trials to

help you hone your newly acquired web swinging upgrades, and mixing the movie’s story with classic Spidey villains like the rhino, Mysterio and the black cat Spiderman 2 is a web head’s dream. That will have you singing the classic cartoon’s theme song for days. (Spiderman, Spiderman does whatever a Spider can… sorry, right moving on.)

#1Batman: Arkham City What can be said about this game that hasn’t already been said? Well let’s give it a shot. Arkham City follows the story that a former Arkham warden is now the

Mayor of Gotham and desided to place everyone from Blackgate prison and Arkham into one enclosed city run by Dr. Hugo Strange, and after some strange

goings on in the city Batman goes in to investigate. This game is a fitting sequel to Arkham Asylum, And, as a good sequel should, this game builds upon the mechanics of the first by polishing the fighting mechanics of the first game as well as adding new gadgets that the capped crusader can use. This installment also incorporates lots of lore from the batman comics on not so major villains in the game, most notably Zsasz the guy who etches the number of people he murdered onto his skin. In a side quest you can complete in the game Zsasz calls you from various phones throughout the city and if you answer you have to do a timed race to another ringing phone or he will kill a hostage he has, but during each call he gives you an insight into his background and the reason why he is compelled to do. I personally loved this section of the gave as I didn’t know much about Zsasz but hearing his story in the game encouraged me to me

to learn more about him. The more open feel to this game’s map, compared to Arkham Asylum, is much more fitting to the gliding mechanic carried over from the first game, as the first had a more cramped map compared to the building to building gliding that makes crossing this game’s map fun. Overall Arkham city is the perfect comic book game as it stays true to the source material, has a great in game story, fun controls and mechanics and has an amazing atmosphere, truly an amazing gaming experience.
